Felix, originally from Ukraine, is a trained electrical engineer who spent several years in the Soviet Army working on military intelligence before emigrating to the United States. He can talk with equal enthusiasm about the background cosmic radiation still echoing from the Big Bang, megawatt data centers, techniques to perfect your low brace turn, or how to use your high brace in rough water with style and grace. Felix is an experienced American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 2 Coastal Kayak Instructor who has worked with Sea Kayak Connecticut for over 10 years.
Jesse is in his fifth year guiding for Sea Kayak Connecticut, but has long enjoyed kayaking since a memorable summer trip as a teenager when he first picked up a paddle. A Social Studies teacher who has coached various sports throughout Fairfield County over the past 14 years, Jesse has since developed a passion for whitewater paddling and sea kayaking and relishes new opportunities to learn and share his enthusiasm with others. When he is not teaching, coaching, or guiding, you can find him running the rapids at his favorite spot – Bulls Bridge on the Housatonic River!
Lanier Saperstein first kayaked as a young army cadet in the London Irish Rifles. It was a freezing cold day in Aldershot, England, when he put on a spray deck, got in a boat, and was immediately told to capsize. He had to wait for his NCOs to bring him back up. After what seemed like an eternity, Lanier was upright, gasping for breath, and frozen. Yet he was hooked.
Life eventually got in the way of kayaking. Lanier finished school in England, went to college in Virginia, graduate school in London, and attended law school in Chicago. He spent the last 25+ years working as a lawyer in NYC and now heads his firm’s US-China practice group. But having never lost his love of the water and kayaking, Lanier jumped back into the sport (his wife says perhaps too enthusiastically).
Lanier is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 2 Coastal Kayak Instructor and a British Canoeing (BC) 3-Star Paddler. He lives in Rye, New York, and in his free time, he enjoys playing squash, annoying his family, listening to podcasts, and lecturing anyone who will listen about whiskey and esoteric issues of antiquity.
Inspired by the marine adventurer Jacques Cousteau, Todd was an active scuba diver in his earlier days and received an undergraduate degree in biology with an environmental concentration. Initially intent on becoming a marine biologist, Todd pivoted to a career in investment management after graduate school.
Years later, Todd returned to his passion for the ocean through sea kayaking, receiving his American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 2 Instructor Certification at Sea Kayak Connecticut. Todd can be found in the summer months on Long Island Sound, the Hudson River, or inland lakes, logging the miles engaged in his favorite pastime – sea kayaking.
